JOSEPH SERIDIS TRUST FUND

The Hon. J.S.L. DAWKINS(15:51:34): I am always grateful for the selfless efforts of people in our community towards helping others in a range of ways. I rise to speak first about the Joseph Seridis Trust Fund. Beginning in 2004 in honour of Joseph Seridis, who sadly passed away in 2002, the trust supports young people in Gawler and the surrounding areas who are suffering from physical and multiple disabilities by providing them with equipment to enhance their day-to-day lives and independence. To date the Joseph Seridis Trust Fund has provided over $75,000 worth of grants ranging from wheelchairs and ramps to computers and iPads, equipment that would not otherwise have been available.

BANFIELD, HON. D.H.L.

The Hon. J.S.L. DAWKINS(14:30:43): I briefly rise to support this motion. I met the Hon. Mr Banfield when I was a young lad, I suppose, as my father was in this place for all of the time that the Hon. Mr Banfield was here. Despite their different backgrounds, they developed a friendship and mutual respect for each other that I think many of us in this place acknowledge can be developed across the party lines, and they had a strong regard for each other.

SUPPLY BILL 2014: SECOND READING

The Hon. J.S.L. DAWKINS(17:04:47): I rise today to support the second reading of this bill which provides, I understand, some $3.941 billion to ensure the payment of public servants and the continuation of state government services from 1 July until the Appropriation Bill for 2014-15 passes both houses. As we know, the Supply Bill gives parliamentary authority to the government of the day to continue delivering services via public expenditure, and the government is entitled to continue delivering these services in accordance with general approved priorities; that is, the priorities of the last 12 months until the Appropriation Bill is passed. Before making some comments on a couple of areas in particular, I note that the use of that money is for the work of public servants to service the constituents and residents of South Australia.

SUICIDE PREVENTION

The Hon. J.S.L. DAWKINS(17:34:21): Suicide does not discriminate; it can affect any family at any time. I thank very much those members who have spoken to this motion today: the Hon. Mr Gazzola, the Hon. Ms Franks and the Hon. Ms Vincent. They, among many others in the parliament, have been extraordinarily supportive of my work in this area and my passion for doing everything we can to reduce suicide in the community. Each of them particularly demonstrated to the council the broad extent to which suicide is a major issue right across all demographic and geographic areas of this state and beyond, of course.

ADDRESS IN REPLY

Adjourned debate on motion for adoption (resumed on motion).

The Hon. J.S.L. DAWKINS         (         16:27         :09         ):  I rise to support this motion and indicate my thanks for the speech with which the Governor opened this parliament. I continue to appreciate the work that the Governor and Mrs Scarce do right around this state. I acknowledge the fact that only recently has he once again been up to an Operation Flinders exercise at Yankaninna and has gone out walking with the young people and slept out with them. I commend him highly for doing that. I have been to Operation Flinders on many occasions and supported them greatly as an ambassador but walking with the kids is not something that I have done. I have done many other activities with the young people up there but I commend the Governor for his capacity and ability to do that.
