Surrogacy Bill

The Hon. J.S.L. DAWKINS (16:32): It would come as no surprise to most people in this chamber that I rise to support this bill and support it very strongly. Members in this place will understand, I think, that I have been working on these issues since 2005 and that my initial legislation in the Legislative Council was well reviewed by the Social Development Committee of the day, led by the Hon. Mr Hunter. While I did not agree with everything in that report, the reality was that we got, I think, a better bill, which went through this place relatively quickly. It took some time, however, to get it through the other place, but we finally got that legislation through late in 2009.

INTERCULTURAL FUTURES

The Hon. J.S.L. DAWKINS (15:53): Over recent months, I have been pleased to work with Ms Alexandra McGee, the project coordinator at Welcome Australia, on a program called Intercultural Futures. I have attended two forums as part of that program, on Saturday 18 May and Saturday 14 September at The Welcome Centre in Bowden. As I think many of us know, Welcoming Australia exists to cultivate a culture of welcome and create a future where people of all backgrounds have equal opportunity to belong, contribute and thrive.

Incontinence

The Hon. J.S.L. DAWKINS (15:44): I rise today to speak about incontinence and particularly male incontinence, and that will not be lost on the Hon. Mr Pangallo. But seriously, individuals afflicted by incontinence must carefully plan every outing to reduce the embarrassing moments when leakage unexpectedly occurs. In addition, they must factor in how much to drink before and during an outing and where to access the toilet to accommodate a bathroom schedule. In the event that no toilets are accessible, they may have to cancel their outing.
